Free Sessions for Internet Beginners

July 2007

Thanks to a grant from UK Online, we can offer two free taster sessions to beginners to get you started on using the Internet.  This includes a free email address that you can use anywhere, so you can learn to use your email at the Centre and carry on using it at home.

Our grant will also allow us to continue to offer subsidised beginners' courses, starting in September.  See our Course List for details.

Appleby Online Centre has been awarded funding by Awards for All to develop training material for open source office applications such as OpenOffice and FireFox.  This will provide subsidised training courses to community and voluntary organisations who can use benefit from free office software.  OpenOffice includes a word processing program, spreadsheet, database and presentations (similar to Microsoft PowerPoint but at no cost to community groups or volunteers).

New Short Courses and Tasters on Using the Web

November 2006

A series of 3 hour sessions will start in January covering a range of topics relating to the Internet, from tasters for beginners to the web and email, to more advanced topics like creating your own blog and using photo sharing sites for your digital images.  Watch out for details.

We're also offering free introductory sessions to MyGuide - a simple to use web based email and web searching system that will get you up and running with your own email address in no time.  Designed for beginners, MyGuide has been created by UK Online to provide a basic tool that is easy and safe to use.

Appleby Online awarded net:gain development funding

April 2006

Appleby Online has been selected as a potential net:gain centre - one of 30 nationwide.

Net:gain is an initiative backed by the Home Office to help voluntary and community organisations make the most of information technology.  Eligible organisations will be able to join net:gain and get support and training to help them develop and implement an ICT strategy for their organisation.

Appleby Online's funding is to help us prepare to become a net:gain centre for the area.  The first stage is to recruit local voluntary and community groups to a first year membership.  This includes an initial workshop on developing an IT strategy and follow up events to help select the appropriate tools and training so that new technology can be used effectively to increase the efficiency and support the work of the organisation.

For more information the national net:gain web site is www.net-gain.org.uk
