Opportunities to Learn at Appleby Online Centre

We are in the process of preparing our course schedule for the new academic year starting September 2008.  Dates, times and prices will be announced shortly.

Our courses range from complete beginners' IT, to advanced use of office applications (database, spreadsheet, word processing, presentations and desk top publishing).  We can tailor a course to suit your needs.  We also have non-IT courses: languages, crafts and hobbies.

FREE Internet taster sessions for beginners: learn to use the web and send emails with a supported session during any of our open hours.  Call first to book a place.  We can set you up with an email address and get you started, even if you have never used a computer before.

Making the Most of the Web.  Ask about flexible options to find out how to use the web for accessing services

Information and Advice on Jobs & Learning

We can give you help with CV writing, job searches and career decisions.  Interviews can be arranged at the centre with the Leicestershire adult careers advice organisation: NextStep.  Call for details.

OpenOffice.org Training

Learn to use OpenOffice applications (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and database).  OpenOffice is a free alternative to Microsoft Office and is widely used by community and voluntary organisations.  Appleby Online has produced a set of workbooks (funded by the lottery Awards for All fund) that teach you to use OpenOffice.org.  You can follow a course here at the Centre during our normal flexible workshop sessions.

Courses

We host several different types of courses, offering a range of qualifications and informal learning opportunities from complete beginners to advanced levels:

Flexible learning: computer courses that you follow at your own pace at the centre, using learning resources and workbooks.  There is no set time when you have to attend, just a generous time limit to complete the course work.  You will have a personal tutor, and there will always be someone to help at the centre when you need advice.  See our Open Hours for times you can follow these courses.

Computer classes: more traditional style courses run by a teacher over a set number of weeks.  These vary from single 3 hour taster sessions to full length courses.  You must book in advance as space is limited.

Languages: A variety of courses are available from beginners to advanced.

Taster Courses: These are based on a waiting list - a tutor will be booked when we have enough people - so call to add your name to the list

Leisure and Crafts: Non-IT courses covering topics such as family history and needlework

All qualification courses are run in conjunction with Stephenson College, Coalville.  Courses without a qualification, such as the Beginners' courses, are run independently by Information Byway.
